PORTAGE TOWNSHIP | A 28-year-old man was arrested Thursday after threatening to harm himself and his son, Porter County deputies said.

Phillip Hritz, of Valparaiso, faces charges of confinement, intimidation and domestic battery. He was being held in the Porter County Jail without bail Thursday night.

Porter County Sheriff's Department Sgt. Larry LaFlower said police were initially called Thursday afternoon to a domestic disturbance at 769 Capitol Road in South Haven.

The child's mother told police that she and Hritz got into a fight about 1:26 p.m. At 2:35 p.m., Hritz called the woman and said he was going to harm himself and their 18-month-old son if she didn't go talk to him, LaFlower said.

Deputies contacted Hritz's cellphone provider who gave detectives coordinates of Hritz whereabouts based on his proximity to cellphone towers.

LaFlower said he was in the process of filing information to have Indiana State Police issue an Amber Alert when a Portage officer spotted Hritz and pulled him over.

Hritz was arrested by Portage police about 3:30 p.m., LaFlower said.

The child was in the vehicle and was not injured. He was reunited with his mother.
