VALPARAISO | Ann Brugos, of the city's Public Works Department, was appointed to a three-year term on the 15-member board of directors of the Indiana Urban Forestry Council.

The council is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting public education about the value and need for trees in public spaces and to preserving and expanding urban forests.

Brugos is the founder and coordinator of the city's Shade Brigade, a group of volunteers involved in planting trees in the city. She recently led tree planting efforts for about 100 trees in Keystone Commons and in Jessee-Pifer Park and has helped the city receive grants of more than $40,000 for reforestation efforts.

Brugos also is involved in educating people about trees and in identifying threats such as the emerald ash borer. To join the Shade Brigade, contact Brugos as (219) 462-4612.
