VALPARAISO | The council is looking for people interested in being on the Valparaiso School Board. The council appointment is one of two to be made in the coming months.

The council appoints one person each year to a four-year term that begins July 1. The deadline for submitting a resume to the city is May 31. The council will review the applications June 3 and select the five finalists to be interviewed at two public meetings.

The first interview session will be held before the council's regular meeting June 10, and council members will ask questions. Before the council's June 24 meeting, the candidates will answer questions from the public. Questions can be submitted to councilmen, at city hall or to City Attorney Dave Hollenbeck, who will read the questions to the candidates.

The council will vote at its June 24 meeting on who will be appointed. Jim Jorgensen's term is expiring. This also is the year the Center Township Board will pick its representative to the school board. Board President Mark Maassel's term is expiring.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old. The council's appointee has to be a city resident, while the township board's representative can live anywhere in the township.

To help the council in making its appointment, the school board and the administration are expected to make a presentation of the short, intermediate and long term issues facing the schools at the April 8 council meeting. That session will be for the council to get information.

At the council's April 22 meeting, the school board and the administration will make a similar report, and then the public will be asked to share its views on the issues facing the schools and tell the council what it would like to see the new school board appointee focus on.

Councilman Mike Baird, the council's liaison to the schools, said, "We consider the school board appointment to be one of the most important duties of the council, and we hope we get many candidates applying so we have a good slate to choose from. The board is very important, and it's important we have the best people applying."
