UNION TOWNSHIP | A man told authorities he shot and killed a neighbor's pit bull dog after the animal attacked and injured his son in his fenced-in yard.
Porter County Sheriff's Department investigators said they were called out at 4:35 p.m. Friday to the 400 block of Sturgeon Drive where the father told them he had been in his garage when his daughter ran in and said her brother was being attacked by the dog.
The man told investigators he found the dog on top on his son, who was screaming for help. The boy suffered multiple puncture wounds to his head and one on his arm, and a laceration to his right eye lid and eyeball.
The man took the boy inside and returned to the yard with his .40-caliber handgun and shot six to eight times into the animal until his gun was empty, police said.
The dog owner reportedly said the animal had never attacked anyone and was contained in its own yard. She said the children in question had constantly provoked the animal and poked him with sticks through the fence, and their father had earlier threatened to shoot the animal.
Police were unable to determine where the dog had crossed over or under the five-foot fence.
No charges were filed in the case.
