UNION TOWNSHIP | A Crown Point man was arrested after police said he fled from one accident and got into a second accident Wednesday afternoon.
Jacob Ely, 21, was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor.
Police were called just after 2:30 p.m. Wednesday regarding a hit-and-run crash in the area of County Road 550 West and County Road 300 North.
Officers learned a Valparaiso man was westbound on U.S. 30 and stopped at a red light at County Road 500 West. The Valparaiso man said when the light turned green, he was struck from behind by Ely, who was driving his girlfriend's car.
He told police Ely drove off without exchanging information or calling police.
The Valparaiso man followed Ely, who drove off westbound on U.S. 30, then turned north onto County Road 550 West, police said.
When Ely passed County Road 300 North, he crashed the car a second time into a wooded area, according to police.
Police said evidence at the second crash suggests Ely was driving at a high speed.
According to the police report, Ely told officers, "I had a panic attack. My girlfriend trusted my to drive her car and I hit that guy."
The car driven by Ely was impounded.
