UNION TOWNSHIP | Two horses were struck by a train and killed recently in rural Union Township.

Porter County police Sgt. Larry LaFlower said the horses were struck in the area of County Road 375 West and 400 North.

LaFlower said someone reported seeing the dead horses Friday morning to the Porter County Animal Shelter. Staff at the shelter then contacted Porter County Animal Control, which is part of the Sheriff’s Department. Animal control is now investigating.

LaFlower said one horse was a mare, and one was brown, and that was the only description he had.

LaFlower said officials don’t know when the horses were struck, but he said it appears it was a recent accident.

Police do not know who owns the horses, but that remains under investigation.

Anyone with information about accident can call the sheriff’s department at (219) 477-3000.
