LIBERTY TOWNSHIP | From the robes, television and snacks in the inner waiting room to the neutral colors on the walls, the Center for Women's Health is designed to ease anxiety that can accompany medical procedures.

That was an ongoing message during tours Tuesday at the center, which opened Oct. 1. The center is attached to Porter Regional Hospital, 85 E. U.S. 6, but is accessible via a separate entrance.

It offers outpatient diagnostic and treatment services, such as digital 3-D mammography, bone density checks, ductograms, breast tomography, OB ultrasounds and minimally invasive breast biopsies.

The facility has three ultrasound rooms and three mammogram rooms but uses only two of each. The extra rooms were built in anticipation of growth, said nurse Cheryl Wallace, breast care coordinator at the center.

Wallace helps guide patients through the process. If something appears suspicious on a mammogram, a patient may undergo a diagnostic mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy, she said.

A benefit of being connected to the hospital is that doctors can communicate easily and lab work can be done on site. The hospital also offers a coffee shop and cafeteria, if a woman anticipates a long wait, said Karen Keltner, manager of marketing and communications.

Jonathan Nalli, CEO of Porter Health Care System, said the Center for Women's Health is a culmination of a lot of planning.

Feedback has been positive, with compliments on the calming environment during what can be a scary time for a woman, Chief Operating Officer Brian Sinotte said.

Sinotte, who was involved in the planning from the beginning, said a multidisciplinary committee contributed input to the design and services for the  center. The goal was to design an efficient floor plan with the comfort of a spa.
