Starting today, Times readers will see a new columnist on A3 on Sundays and Wednesdays, in the spot formerly occupied by the late Mark Kiesling's columns.

Rich James' column on gun shows at the Lake County Fairgrounds is on A3 today.

James is new to The Times but not to Northwest Indiana. He has been writing about politics and life in Northwest Indiana for 40 years.

James, a Lake County native, is an Indiana University graduate and a U.S. Army veteran. He began his journalism career at the Herald News Group, a now-defunct chain of weekly newspapers, and left there for a 34-year stint at The Post-Tribune that ended in 2011.

James has won several statewide awards for editorial writing and column writing, as well as the Chicago Headline Club's Peter Lisagor Award.

Also, Editorial Page Editor Doug Ross, whose weekly column formerly appeared on the Opinion page, will write a column to appear on A3 on Fridays.
