CROWN POINT | Lake County Sheriff Rogelio "Roy" Dominguez is set Wednesday to unveil what are expected to be multimillion-dollar cuts to help the county balance its 2009 budget.
He is meeting with a committee of Lake County Council members in response to their call for job cuts and spending reductions.
"I'm excited and proud of my staff for putting together a plan implementing significant cost savings that will remove the burden from taxpayers to user fees and outside grants without sacrificing public safety," Dominguez said Tuesday.
Other county officials have pledged to cut 66 full-time jobs from the current payroll as part of the council's plan to cut $15 million from current spending levels. The cuts are necessary because of state-mandated property tax caps that will reduce revenue to local government.
Council members said last week they still need to cut about $5 million from the proposed 2009 budget and hadn't yet heard what the sheriff would do.
Dominguez said Tuesday he will follow recommendations in the Good Government Initiative study to consolidate services in his office and other wide-ranging strategies.
