CROWN POINT | Nine-year-old Megan Mulroe said she feels good about giving money to the Friends of the Orphans.
Mulroe was one of hundreds of children and adults from St. Mary Catholic Community School and parish who welcomed visitors from Nicaragua this week.
St. Mary raised nearly $10,000 for Friends of the Orphans during Easter and Lent. The money was presented Thursday to the Rev. Ron Hicks, regional director of Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos.
Hicks is based in El Salvador. He and 19 youngsters from that region stopped at St. Mary to accept the donation. The visitors were sponsored by St. Marcelline Parish in Schaumburg, Ill.
The Friends of the Orphans is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children through the support of the Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos network of orphanages in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Megan, a fourth-grader, said she was so impressed with the organization she chose a youngster to support by sending money, cards and gifts to the child's homeland.
