VALPARAISO | Ongoing efforts to correct the county's tax woes appear to be paying off.
Porter County Auditor James Kopp told a group of local officials Wednesday evening that the county expects to send out final tax bills during the week of Nov. 30, as compared to January the year before.
The news is even better for next year.
The county should be able to send tax bills out in June with the November installment attached, Kopp said.
"We're making progress," Kopp told members of the Porter County League of Councils.
An assortment of problems at the local and state levels resulted in delays in tax bills the past several years, Kopp said. County officials have tackled the problems, in part, by installing new computer systems and meeting on a weekly basis.
This year's final tax bills will be due 15 days after they are mailed, which means the cities, towns and schools should receive 95 percent of the tax money collected sometime in December, Kopp said.
The county had sent out provisional bills in June.
