MUNSTER | The Times of Northwest Indiana received the Community Spirit Award on Tuesday after raising $36,349 for the Lake Area United Way.

The money raised during the 2011-12 campaign will go toward programs focusing on early childhood development, parenting instruction and after-school programs, according to a news release.

Bill Masterson, Times Media Co. publisher and vice president of Lee Enterprises, accepted the award Tuesday.

The Times contributions grew by 9.6 percent during the last campaign with 55 percent more participation from employees, according to the release. On average, an employee gave $114.39.

Bob Scott, vice president for the Lake Area United Way, said in the release that The Times gave the most among local media companies.
