MARKHAM | A third man has been charged in connection with a card game that turned into a violent brawl in Calumet City last week.
Cook County Judge Darron Bowden set bond Monday at $200,000 for 21-year-old Jante J. Fondren, of the 300 block of Buffalo Avenue, who is charged with aggravated battery in the beating.
Fondren was arrested by Calumet City police on Sunday, one day after two other city residents were arrested for the same incident, which occurred last Thursday.
The other two, 41-year-old Michael Jones, of the 300 block of Buffalo Avenue, and 19-year-old Jarvis Cheers, of the 600 block of Clyde Avenue, also are charged with aggravated battery.
Both appeared in court on Sunday, when a judge set bond at $75,000 for Jones and $50,000 for Cheers.
All three man are scheduled to appear May 29 in Cook County court in Markham for a preliminary hearing.
Police said Jones is the uncle to both Cheers and Fondren, and the three men were playing cards with a fourth person who is not related to any of them.
Calumet City police Cmdr. Dan Zorzi said all of them were drinking and playing cards when an argument started, and then turned into a physical confrontation. Police say they believe all three beat up the fourth person with a baseball bat, and used a knife to cut his neck and abdomen.
The fourth person was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he received 50 surgical staples to close his wounds. That person has since been released from the hospital.
