Two right lanes of the outbound Bishop Freeway are open after an accident at 115th Street, but inbound lanes remained closed and could impact the evening rush hour.
No one was seriously injured when a semitrailer dump truck driving inbound on the expressway hit the 115th Street overpass about 10:15 a.m., Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said. The impact caused the cab to rip off and keep going until becoming perched on a median north of the 115th Street overpass, he said.
Illinois Department of Transportation engineers are on the scene to evaluate the extent of the damage to the structure that carries 115th Street over the freeway and determine what needs to be done to re-open the inbound lanes.
IDOT said a temporary closure of the outbound Bishop Ford is needed to extricate the dump truck. The timing of this has not been determined.
Alternative routes include the Chicago Skyway, Interstate 57 and Halsted Street.
A father and son were in a car behind the semi that struck the mound of gravel as it spilled across the inbound side of the Ford Freeway, Langford said. Neither was seriously injured, he said, adding the car appeared to have purchased this morning at an auto auction near 14th Street Harvey.
Neither the truck driver, nor two people in the car were injured. Emergency crews eventually took the truck driver to a local hospital after he initially refused treatment.
"He was fine," Langford said. "He just didn't want to go."
The crash caused a small amount of fuel to spill, but Langford said it didn't pose a danger and wasn't enough to warrant a hazardous materials response.
