PORTAGE | The school resource officer at Portage High School, who arrested three students between Tuesday and Thursday, made two more arrests Friday morning.
Cpl. Troy Williams arrested a 15-year-old South Haven boy on a possession of a controlled substance charge. He also arrested a 15-year-old Portage boy on a dealing a controlled substance charge.
Williams said the South Haven boy was meeting with his probation officer at the school and was about to be drug tested. The boy admitted he'd consumed two pills of Adderall, which is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.
Williams said one additional pill was found in the boy's backpack. The boy told police he purchased the pills from the Portage boy.
Williams said the Portage boy denied dealing, but admitted he has a prescription for Adderall. Williams said three pills were found in the boy's shoe.
The South Haven boy and the Portage boy were taken to the Juvenile Detention Center. The South Haven boy was taken via ambulance to a hospital and was treated before being locked up.
The earlier arrests at the school were on theft, marijuana possession and pill dealing charges. Williams said the increase in pill usage and dealing shows that parents need to dispose of or lock up pills in their homes so they don't get into the hands of their children or their children's friends.
Williams said parents also should consider dispensing their children's medicine to them daily and enlisting the school nurse to dispense any doses that need to be taken during school.
