PORTER COUNTY | Drivers in the area of Valparaiso and Burns Harbor soon will experience street closures or lane changes due to new construction projects.

The Indiana Department of Transportation announced Friday that lanes will be restricted on Ind. 49 between Division Road and U.S. 30 begining Monday and extending through November during a repaving project. Also, various ramps at the interchange of Ind. 49 and U.S. 30 will be closed.

Beginning Monday, the traffic configuration will change so that both directions of Ind. 49 traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction on the current southbound side of the divided highway.

Ramps from Ind. 49 to east and westbound U.S. 30, as well as ramps from U.S. 30 to northbound Ind. 49 will be closed until the beginning of July. After that work is completed, traffic will be reconfigured to the other side of Ind. 49 so the other side of the road and the connecting ramps can be resurfaced.

A posted detour will direct Ind. 49 north traffic wishing to access U.S. 30 east or west to continue on Ind. 49 north to Ind. 2, west to Ind. 49 and south to U.S. 30. Traffic on U.S. 30 wishing to access Ind. 49 north will be directed to take U.S. 30 east to U.S. 421 north to U.S. 6 west to Ind. 2 west to Ind. 49 north.

In Valparaiso, beginning Monday, Sturdy Road north at the roundabout will be closed for about 25 days for the reconstruction of Sturdy Road North at the roundabout. It will be posted road closed to local traffic only at the intersection of Sturdy Road and Chicago Street.

In Burns Harbor, INDOT announced work is scheduled to begin next week for a resurface construction project on U.S. 20 from a half mile west of I-94 to just east of I-94. The project is scheduled for completion by September.

Only westbound traffic will be restricted to one lane next week as preliminary shoulder and guardrail work progresses. The project also includes resurfacing the interchange ramps between I-94 and U.S. 20. When resurface construction begins on the eastbound lanes of U.S. 20, the connecting ramps to and from I-94 also will be closed.
