HAMMOND | Sentencing has been delayed for a Valparaiso man who has pleaded guilty to possessing child pornography.

According to court documents, for about a year starting near August 2009, Jeffrey Alan Smith engaged in a relationship with someone he met online whom he thought was 19, but who later told him she was younger than 18. The government alleged she was actually a 15-year-old girl from Michigan who sent Smith sexually explicit pictures of herself, records show.

Smith pleaded guilty in December 2012. He is set to be sentenced Sept. 19 before U.S. Chief Judge Philip Simon.

A handful of people have written letters in support of Smith, among them Jerry Davich, a columnist for the Post-Tribune newspaper.

"I am writing to vouch for his character and integrity based on my interactions with him through the years," Davich wrote on Post-Tribune letterhead in January. "Although I know he is not a model citizen, he aspires to be something higher than what he appears in your courtroom, and I wanted you to know that."

Davich previously wrote about Smith in a 2010 column about Smith and his then-fiancee raising funds to help pay for their upcoming wedding.
