WASHINGTON | U.S. Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind., announced Wednesday that Gary Chicago International Airport will receive more than $1 million as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
The $1,030,000 from the Federal Aviation Administration will fund runway rehabilitation.
"I have long recognized the Gary airport's potential to create economic opportunities in Northwest Indiana," Visclosky said in a news release. "I am glad that the Department of Transportation and the FAA share that view and have decided to include the airport in our economic recovery efforts."
Visclosky helped the airport secure its 2006 Letter of Intent, which provided $57.8 million over 10 years, available in $6 million annual installments for improvements and expansion to increase the size of the airport by 50 percent and extend the main runway to 9,000 feet.
