GARY | A Gary woman accused of taking more than $50,000 in Social Security benefits from children whose mother died was sentenced Tuesday to a year of house arrest.

According to the plea deal, Cynthia Ceaser became the representative payee in 2002 after the mother of three children died. The children were removed from her care in 2008, but she continued to collect the funds.

She collected more than $55,600 and agreed to pay $55,603 in restitution, according to court documents.

Ceaser was sentenced to probation so she could continue her job at a hospital and pay the restitution, according to the sentencing memorandum.

She will be under supervised release after she finishes the year of house arrest.
