Poverty is more pervasive in Northwest Indiana than most people realize, even 50 years after President Lyndon Johnson declared war on poverty.

Meeting earlier this year with representatives of organizations and agencies that help residents cope during hard times, it was evident The Times should take a detailed look at the issue of neighbors in need in our region. Publisher Chris White and Executive Editor Bill Nangle brought together members of the news staff to undertake a project that will be ongoing as evidenced by today’s special section, The Price of Poverty.

Members of the project team include editors Crista Zivanovic, Robert Blaszkiewicz and Marc Chase, staff writers Vanessa Renderman, Carmen McCollum and Ed Bierschenk, photographers John Watkins, Jonathan Miano and John Luke, and designer Deborah Hile.
