Guest Commentary by Olga Velazquez
Portage's continued success relies on the strong leadership of our new mayor. I am the right choice. I am the Democrat nominee, having won the primary election.
Voters must also look to what character traits you want in a mayor. Mayors must be willing to be full-time mayors. Mayors must be able and willing to listen to the citizens and have a heartfelt understanding of their needs, their dreams for their children, their problems and wishes.
Mayors must be strong leaders, make decisions and understand the importance of serving their community. A mayor must balance and prioritize the immediate needs of the citizens while planning for future generations of Portage families. My 25-plus years of experience as a mental health professional and my training have prepared me to achieve these lofty goals. My experience as your councilwoman for five years and serving as a member of the budget, ordinance, ways and means committees and various boards have prepared me to serve as mayor and guide our city forward toward a bright and prosperous future.
My heart's work has always been about service to people. I seek the opportunity to provide leadership, service and vision for Portage residents as your mayor. I will work to keep property taxes low by continuing to attract businesses. We must look to diversify our tax base so the burden is lessened to all taxpayers. It is essential to encourage investment in our city to sustain economic strength and promote a quality of life that makes the city a great place to live, work, play and raise our families.
Unmanaged growth is a concern. I oppose the building of additional multi-family apartment complexes. Our current housing mix is appropriate for the needs of our residents. Additionally, we must consider the housing needs of our senior citizens.
The safety and security of residents is government's main responsibility. I will be tough on crime and continue to support public safety services. I will create a public safety committee to increase communication between city departments, businesses and work to improve neighborhood watch programs.
It is important to continue the high level of city services our citizens deserve. Our police, fire, street and sanitation services are among the best in the area, and I will not privatize our city services.
We must strive to keep costs low and efficiency high to uphold our duties as public servants. I will promote an efficient government and manage our resources responsibly. Please give me the opportunity to serve as your next mayor. I will work hard for you, the citizens of Portage.
