On Saturday, the Lake County Republican Precinct Organization will meet to elect a new county chairman. It is no secret that Republicans in Lake County have been divided over the past several years. And although we have experienced some success, we have not provided Lake County residents with the viable option needed for an effective two-party system.

The opportunity to elect a new chairman happens every four years, and this year’s choice will directly affect the success of the party throughout the next election cycle. The choice in this year’s election is clear.

One candidate, Allen Katz, represents a continuation of the status quo; the other, Dan Dernulc, offers a new direction.

Dernulc currently serves as District 4 Lake County Councilman and has served in the past as a Highland Town Council member and as chairman of the Little Calumet River Basin Commission. His experience in running successful campaigns and his proven leadership as council president and board chairman uniquely qualify him to lead the Lake County GOP.

Dernulc is liked and respected among his peers and has received public endorsements from more than half of the GOP elected officials in Lake County. Dan is a team player and has already worked with many of us on past campaigns.

If successful, Dernulc is committed to bringing the party back together and healing the wounds that have divided the party. He will not support candidates in primary elections allowing the voters to decide without prejudice. He will support all Republican candidates in the general election, not just a chosen few, and he will work to develop good candidates giving Lake County voters a viable choice. He considers fundraising to be a major responsibility of the chairman and has the stature and credibility needed to raise the money it takes to run modern and successful campaigns.

He will surround himself with talented people. His proposed slate includes vice chairman candidate Rebecca Holwerda, who is the current GOP Indiana District 1 vice chair; state Rep. Rick Niemeyer as candidate for secretary; and Munster Town Chairman Andy Qunell for treasurer.

Members of city and town organizations will be included in discussions regarding the management of their organizations, a philosophy of inclusion.

The opportunity to elect a new chairman and change the course of the party comes around only every four years. This year we have a candidate who can and will bring about that change.

I encourage all Republican precinct committeemen and vice committeemen in Lake County to join me on March 2 to vote for change. Vote for Dernulc for Lake County Republican chairman.
