The Internet felt a great disturbance in the force when the Walt Disney Co. announced it had bought Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion. People were stunned when Disney also announced another three Star Wars films, with the first being slotted for release in 2015.

This is a big step for which George Lucas could get tremendous backlash from his fandom.

The Twitterverse exploded with hashtags about the purchase. Millions of people mockingly speculated about the plot of the upcoming movies. People begged for crossover films. There was confusion, joy and anger in the tweets. It was almost as if the public didn't know how to react to the news. The entire announcement came up out of nowhere. Social media sites took it and ran with it.

Memes were created almost instantly and posted all over the web. Princess Leia surrounded by other Disney princesses like Jasmine, Ariel, and Cinderella with a caption reading: Which of these does not belong?

The Star Wars films will continue to be made by Lucasfilm Ltd. under Kathleen Kennedy, but they will have to answer to Disney. The franchise will also be integrated into the parks.

Disney has limitless possibilities when it comes to making money off of the lucrative icons that have spawned from Star Wars. The question becomes this: Will Disney try to alter the world that millions have fallen in love with to be more family-friendly, like most of its content?

This Disney purchase of a legendary franchise could polarize its viewership. Some die-hards might not want to see a new movie without George Lucas as the helm. Others will be thrilled to see the new adventures of their beloved characters.

Everyone will go to see the first movie, but if the new film isn’t amazing, they won’t go back to see the second one. It is vital for Disney to market the movie correctly and to let the Lucasfilm employees do what they do best. Otherwise, Disney will be blamed for butchering a franchise.

The casting will be crucial to the new films’ success. The trilogy will follow the escapades of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. How do you go about replacing Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford? They created iconic characters and all their nuances. The next generation of actors must carry on the story line flawlessly in order for the film to be believable.

Disney is a savvy company and made a great decision in buying Lucasfilm. Now, they need to prove to the world that they can do the franchise justice. So Disney, take us all to a galaxy far, far away with an incredible cinematic adventure. May the force be with you.
