YOUNG VOICES: Focus on school work, not distractions

As another school year winds down and comes to an end, I know that I, along with a majority of students, find it hard to keep focus in school and complete the work that needs to be finished in order to be done with school and enjoy summer. The end of every year is the same: I lose focus and the motivation to complete assignments, and complete them well. Here are a few ways to push through until summer vacation:

  • Don't stare out the window during class. It's inevitable that you'll start daydreaming and you won't stop until the bell rings at the end of the class period. The warm sun and gentle swaying of the trees are a trap! If you look at them for more than two seconds, you won't be able to look away, and you're hooked.
  • Don't keep a countdown until school is done. If you keep a countdown, you may end up checking it every 20 minutes like I do, and then end up disappointed that it hasn't lost any days in those few minutes.
  • Set goals. Actually try to do homework and get it finished so you're not scrambling to get things done in the last few days of school when you're really stuck on the train at "procrastination station."
  • Treat yourself every once in a while. With warm weather comes the necessity for ice cream. It's OK to splurge on occasion to hold yourself over until summer comes with a little euphoria in a plastic cup with sprinkles.

Staying motivated won't be easy, but we can do it! Just as generations before us have gotten through the lagging last weeks of school, we can too. It won't be easy, but we can stick together and know that you're not the only one struggling through the end of school.

As one of my favorite movies, "Finding Nemo" says, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming …"
