A note to readers

Phil Wieland's column Friday struck a nerve. More than one, in fact.

His criticism of U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann's view on Halloween drew agreement from some readers, but the quotes attributed to Bachmann came not from a news source, but from a satirical website.

Wieland found the quote online, but didn't learn it was fictional rather than factual.

The Times is committed to truth and accuracy, and we don’t take these things lightly. Our reputation as a credible news source is one of our highest priorities.

We apologize for this mistake.
