EDITORIAL: Cline talks are good, action is better
More than two years have passed since the Cline Avenue bridge closed because of structural deficiency. Talks are continuing on a possible replacement, but traffic can't travel on a plan. Northwest Indiana needs this bridge to become a reality.
Soon, either in late February or early March, work will begin on an $8.9 million project to tear down the bridge.
But how soon will the replacement bridge be built?
Two months ago, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels said a deal with American Bridge Partners was "close." That company would build a private toll bridge over the Indiana Harbor and Ship Canal to restore easy access between Northwest Indiana and Chicago.
Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield said progress continues to be made in negotiations with American Bridge Partners.
But we also remember when Ameristar Casino offered to help pay for a free — as in no tolls — Cline Avenue bridge, only to see that plan fizzle before the deal could be finalized.
Using surface streets for a permanent detour, as is now the case on a temporary basis, is not suitable. Closing the bridge has made travel more difficult, harming casino revenues as a result. We need that new bridge.
While we appreciate that talks are continuing on a replacement for the Cline Avenue bridge, we'd appreciate action even more. Reach an agreement and get it built.
