It is our election tradition to publish a recap of our endorsements in a handy take-to-the-polls form. So here's a refresher course on our endorsements.
- President: The nation needs a strong leader to get us out of this economic morass. We endorse Republican Mitt Romney in hopes that he will govern the nation as well as he did Massachusetts.
- U.S. Senate: We endorse Democrat Joe Donnelly, a moderate senator willing to compromise in order to get things accomplished.
- U.S. House of Representatives District 1: We endorse incumbent Democrat Pete Visclosky, who has an excellent record of service to the district.
- Governor: We endorse Democrat John Gregg, who understands Northwest Indiana issues, along with the value of bipartisanship and compromise.
- Attorney general: We endorse Republican incumbent Greg Zoeller, who is already very familiar with the workings of the office and has done much for Hoosiers already.
- Superintendent of public instruction: We endorse Republican incumbent Tony Bennett, who is brash but extremely effective, as we have seen at Calumet and Roosevelt high schools.
- Court of Appeals judges: We endorse incumbents Nancy Vaidik, Michael Barnes and Paul Mathias, three hardworking, reasonable jurists.
- State Senate District 5: We endorse Republican incumbent Ed Charbonneau, a strong supporter of good government who is not bound by the party label and reaches across the aisle to accomplish what needs to be done.
- State House District 4: We endorse Republican incumbent Ed Soliday, who brings his deal-making abilities to the table.
- State House District 11: We endorse Republican Rick Niemeyer, who has an edge because of his experience in local government.
- State House District 12: We endorse Democratic incumbent Mara Candelaria Reardon but admonish her to step up her game and not just follow the party line.
- State House District 15: We endorse Democrat Tom O'Donnell, in part out of concern about the balance of power in the House.
- State House District 19: We endorse Democratic incumbent Shelli VanDenburgh, who has served her district well.
- Lake County Commissioner District 2: We endorse Republican Jerry Tippy, who represents a vote against old-style politics in Lake County.
- Lake County Commissioner District 3: We endorse Democrat Mike Repay, who has ruffled feathers during his time on the Lake County Council.
- Porter County Commissioner District 1: We endorse Democrat Laura Shurr Blaney, who has an edge because of her experience on the Porter County Council.
- Porter County Council at-large: Out of an impressive crop of candidates, we endorse Democrat Bob Poparad, who is gruff but tough; Republican Mark Hoffman, whose leadership abilities would be invaluable for a dysfunctional council; and Republican Joe Wszolek, a strong proponent of planning, then doing.
