Incumbent Roosevelt Allen Jr. faces challenger Lita Filippo for the Democratic nomination for Lake County commissioner in the 1st District.
Filippo is a go-getter, digging up anything she can find. She has been in the insurance business for 18 years and wants to reduce the amount spent on employee health care. Good for her.
Allen is on the ball, too. The insurance was put out to bid, and the county has begun to save money as a result, he said.
Incentives for early retirement, which the county has also done, are also a big improvement. Older workers are more likely to incur catastrophic health care bills, so encouraging them to retire saves the county money.
Allen is looking at other ways to improve employees' health and reducing costs, including setting up a clinic to treat employees, providing preventive services and establishing an exercise program for out-of-shape employees.
Filippo wants improvements for the county's buildings, including the flagship Lake County Government Center. "I believe the building looks kind of sick," she said.
"I don't understand how we have allowed it to get to that point," she said.
Allen noted the county is addressing facilities needs. When he saw regional bus service would not materialize, the county began improving the satellite courthouses instead of consolidating operations in Crown Point.
The county has begun working on the main building in Crown Point, including removing the costly escalators and beginning work on the consolidated E-911 dispatch center. Allen is now chairman of the E-911 steering committee, which faces a Dec. 31 deadline.
Filippo's knowledge of the insurance business could be useful in bringing the county's employee benefit costs under control.
Allen seems to be on top of the issues, though, and has a broader grasp of what must be done.
We endorse Allen for the Democratic nomination for Lake County commissioner in the 1st District.
