From all indications, tonight's election results will show some very close races, and not just for president. That's confirmation that each vote counts, especially in close races.

In Indiana and Illinois, your vote in the presidential race might not seem to matter. According to recent public opinion poll results, Illinois will go for Democrat Barack Obama while Indiana will go for Republican Mitt Romney. But those aren't the only races on the ballot today. Even if you don't want to vote for president, there are many other reasons to exercise your right to vote.

There are races in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate as well. Both are opportunities for you to help determine the nation's future direction.

At the state level, Hoosiers are being asked to choose between three candidates for governor. Which best fits your idea of the appropriate person to lead the state into its bicentennial year, 2016?

Who do you want in the state Legislature?

Which candidate in the superintendent of public instruction race best exemplifies your philosophy of how the state's public schools should be run?

For that matter, who do you want on your school board? In East Chicago, voters finally have been given the opportunity to decide for themselves who should guide the city's school district. Make it count.

There are races at the county level as well. Who should be on the County Council and county board of commissioners? Who is best suited to help lead your county for the next four years?

What direction should your nation, your state, your community, your schools be headed? Here's your chance to be heard.

Living in a democratic republic means the voters must pick the people who will represent the citizenry. Who do you want casting votes on your behalf? This is your chance to pick the best representatives. Don't waste it.

There are many stories of races that have been decided by a small number of votes, and even of races decided by a one-vote margin. Your opinion counts, so make sure your vote is counted.

If you haven't done so already, vote today.
