As I enter the second year of my administration as mayor of Michigan City, I would like to take this opportunity to look back at some of the accomplishments we have made in 2012, while also looking ahead to what I believe will be a continuation of positives for our city, citizens and visitors alike in 2013.
In 2012, Michigan City constructed $2 million in Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalks. This was in addition to our street paving program. The renovation of our historic Elston Grove neighborhood is still on target for a summer 2013 completion date. Phase I of the Michigan Boulevard beautification project is complete, with Phase II set to be let out for bids this summer as well.
Anchored by events such as First Fridays, the Uptown Arts District has continued to grow and flourish. The city believes that the Warren Building will soon be acquired by Artspace and will become the focal point for even more development and vibrancy in the uptown district.
My administration was able to expedite the demolition of the old Goerg's Marina building, which will allow this space to become a new public access point on our lakefront. The demolition of large, vacant and blighted buildings on unsightly property space at Dunes Plaza will be developed by the Kohl's retail store, which is on schedule for a 2013 completion date.
In addition to these exciting projects, Michigan City is home to many attractions and hosts many fun events throughout the year. Our location on the south shore of Lake Michigan, the largest freshwater lake entirely contained within the boundaries of the United States, makes us a sportsman's paradise. The "Coho Capital of the World" is the moniker we've earned by offering an unparalleled level of recreational and tournament fishing opportunities.
Michigan City is a town full of beautiful and diverse pocket parks that give way to Washington Park, the city's crown jewel, which is home to a historic zoo, wonderful harbor and miles of clean beaches and sandy dunes. A historic and picturesque lighthouse stands guard over our mariners and serves as the backdrop for spectacular events such as the In-Water Boat Show and the Great Lakes Grand Prix Super Boat Race.
Festive atmosphere and family fun are always a certainty at our St. Patrick's Day, Fourth of July and Snowflake parades as well as the Lakefront Art Festival, Oktoberfest and the World Champion Drum and Bugle Corps Show.
Michigan City offers fabulous shopping at our Lighthouse Premium Outlet Stores, gaming at the Blue Chip Casino and a full range of dining options
Michigan City offers endless opportunities for both business and recreation. We will continue to be a city that is "Defining the moments, exceeding the times!"
