American tax dollars should support Americans

I agree with your editorial in support of Buy America preferences (“Buy American steel for federal projects,” May 15). Steel is at the heart of the Northwest Indiana economy, and it’s imperative that federal tax dollars be spent on American-made materials to put Americans back to work.

Buy America preferences make good, common sense. In fact, polling by the Alliance for American Manufacturing shows 87 percent of Republicans, 87 percent of independents and 91 percent of Democrats support such policies.

Buy America also creates jobs. A study by the University of Massachusetts-Amherst found maximizing domestic content in infrastructure investment can generate 33 percent more manufacturing jobs.

These preferences also include waivers to address market limitations when domestic content is prohibitively expensive or not available.

When we rebuild our infrastructure, American tax dollars should go to American companies supporting American workers. It’s as simple as that.
