Thanks to a recent Times letter, we now know why Gov. Mitch Daniels banned Howard Zinn's history textbook from K-12 use in Indiana.

Zinn's book is typical leftist propaganda, claiming the United States was built on greed, oppression, and intolerance. Shouldn't grade schoolers be taught America's "war makers" saved the world from tyranny during World War II, and the wealth of "corporate robbers" enables the U.S. to provide billions of dollars a year in foreign aid and charitable giving?

Every nation struggles with unethical forces within its own society. Despite its flaws, America emerged as a bastion of freedom, industrial and technical ingenuity, and vast opportunity for individual growth and success. Ask the millions of immigrants who flee their own countries to come here.

Zinn and his America-hating advocates seek to indoctrinate our youth to resent their own magnificent nation. Clearly, young minds are easier to control.
