$500 apiece is no friendly Friday night poker game

As a retired law enforcement officer, I strongly support all current police officers from the local to federal levels. So when I saw Rich James’ Feb. 6 attack on the Indiana State Excise Police, I was incredulous.

It seems the excise police confiscated over $200,000 from a tavern in Schererville – all amassed by illegal gambling. Illegal. And who knows what the bar owner's cash take was on this?

James thinks this is just “good-natured fun," like a friendly poker game in somebody’s basement. Let me do the math for you. If you divide $200,000 by 400 bettors, you come up with an average of $500! I have never been to friendly “Friday night poker games” where I took $500 to gamble away. James's whole line of reasoning is absurd.

I have friends who disagree with me, but at least that is what I think.

To the Indiana State Excise Police, I say, Great bust! Keep up the good work.
