Once again, after a tragic school shooting , politicians demand more control of guns and ammunition.
This time, at least, there is discussion of improved mental health care, outpatient and residential, for individuals observed to be a possible threat to others.
However, the best way to protect schools is better limit to access by outsiders and armed private guards.
Israeli security consultant Dov Swerling, a counter-terror police veteran, believes armed guards are crucial to school security.
They must be physically healthy and emotionally mature with a certain mental outlook.
Training must be serious -- 40 to 60 hours.
Few teachers have the nature for this position.
Swerling believes U.S. soldiers returning from overseas service are well suited for school protection.
He calls this volunteer army "the best of the American people, like they're the best of the Israeli people. They're the people who took it upon themselves to help others."
