On a recent afternoon our neighbor was in her kitchen preparing Sunday dinner when she heard her back door open. Thinking it was one of her grandchildren, she paid little attention but noticed her screen door did not close. When she went to investigate, two teenagers darted past her from the basement with her grandson's xBox in hand. She ran in the yard yelling when another alert neighbor took chase.
At the neighbors direction the police apprehended one of the teenagers and later caught up with the other teenager, who had changed clothes.
It turns out these teenagers were "friends" of the woman's grandson and had entered through an unlocked back door.
One of the objectives of Edison Community Watch is to "watch out for your neighbors, they are watching out for you." That certainly held true in our neighborhood today.
When our neighbor was asked why he took chase he said, "This will not happen in my neighborhood."
Thanks to our Hammond Police Department and their quick response, these two young men had one of their worst days.
Remember: "Community is not just about me, it's about us."
