I take issue with former Lake County Council member Tom O'Donnell's recent opinion on the Indiana Republicans pandering to their party's base.
Why would anyone believe illegal immigration is only a Republican Party concern?
The Democrats' base, the working class, has been affected by illegal immigration the most.
How would Tom know the Democratic base supports illegal immigration? Has he asked his former constituents?
In 2007, state Rep. Chet Dobis, D-Merrillville, asked his constituents on his legislative survey, do you support tougher penalties against companies who hire illegal aliens?
A resounding 87 percent of Dobis' constituents responded yes, they wanted tough penalties against those who hired illegal immigrants!
During the 2008 summer study session it was discovered an majority of illegal aliens worked in manufacturing, construction, hotels and restaurants, not picking crops.
I'm not sure where O'Donnell found out what the Democrats' base believes in, but illegal immigration is a huge concern of all Americans.
I encourage Tom to do a little research on how much illegal immigration costs taxpayers before he jumps to the unfounded conclusion Democrats support illegal immigration.
