Millions have died in the name of God. Examples of such pious violence in just the past few decades include: Palestine (Jews v. Muslims), the Balkans (Orthodox Serbs v. Catholic Croatians and Bosnian Muslims), Northern Ireland (Protestants v. Catholics), Kashmir (Muslims v. Hindus), Sudan (Muslims v. Christian and animists), Nigeria (Muslims v. Christians), Ethiopia and Eretria (Muslims v. Christians), Sri Lanka (Sinhalese Buddhists v. Tamil Hindus) and Indonesia (Muslims v. Timorese Christians).

So now our brilliant Indiana government provides us with a license plate with "In God We Trust" emblazoned atop the American flag, celebrating the ignorance and hate implicit in the blind devotion to all mythical deities. If we are to trust in any of the Gods mentioned above, it will be with a certainty that such religious fervor only leads to violence and distrust between of the peoples of this earth.

So, I say bravo to our intrepid legislators and governor for wrapping themselves in the cloak of religious dogma and superstition. Maybe next year they can provide us (free of charge) with plates celebrating the Spanish Inquisition, Salem Witch Trials or the Martyrdom of the September 11 highjackers! With all praise to God, of course.
