Better to have prudent spending than problems later

In the Nov. 22 edition of The Times, I read that Indiana is seriously worried about decreasing casino revenues and the effect on the budget. On the same page I saw that we Hoosier taxpayers will each be receiving a tax credit of $111 come tax time in 2013.

On Nov. 29, I read that INDOT is facing funding issues because declining gas tax revenue and the end of the “Major Moves” money.

I am sure I can’t be the only one to see a logic problem here. Why return $111 to each taxpayer when several state agencies are wringing their hands about funding and shortages? I would rather my $111 go toward properly funding education (so underfunded during the Mitch Daniels years) and ensuring the repair and safety of our bridges and roads.

I would rather Indiana be known for its stellar educational system and infrastructure than for its cheap approach to governing. Prudent spending is fine; cheap spending leads to problems down the road.
