Why did Notre Dame football coach Brian Kelly refused to release recruit Eddie Vanderdoes from his letter of intent, causing Vanderdoes to lose a season of eligibility? To protect the "integrity of that very important program."
As coach of Cincinnati, while still under contract, Kelly left his team high and dry on the eve of their bowl game, to join Notre Dame.
Kelly would do well to learn form Valparaiso high school senior golfer Patrick Andrie. When Andrie unwittingly signed his golf card attesting to a score with an incorrect round total, he could have done nothing since he was unaware of the mistake at the time. When he discovered the error, he still could have done nothing and have an incorrect score posted, which would have been to his advantage. Instead, he turned himself in and was disqualified.
While Kelly's and Andrie's circumstances are different, their test of integrity and character are the same. Andrie passed his test with flying colors.
