I am not sure who compiled the list of 30 Faces of Tourism for the South Shore Convention & Visitors Authority, but they missed two people who have provided Northwest Indiana with some of its best summer events.

Tom Dabertin and the Whiting-Robertsdale Chamber of Commerce have moved Pierogi Fest from a small-town festival to a nationally known event. This event and the community behind it have done more to bring in visitors and promote the positive image of Northwest Indiana than any other event.

Dabertin’s latest effort, the WHAM nighttime bicycle ride is proving to be as successful as his other efforts.

The list also left off John Vezmar, the driving force behind Beatles Fest. John has created an event that compares to anything in Chicago. Downtown Hammond hasn’t seen this many people since the days of Goldblatt’s and the Minas store.

Thank you to Dabertin and Vezmar for their past work and future successes. Northwest Indiana needs more people like them.
