I disagree that the perpetrator should walk free if the victim of an abuse with visible signs of an assault decides not to press charges.
Recently, I witnessed an altercation between a woman and her boyfriend. She was hit several times. Upon arrival of the Gary police, the boyfriend was placed in handcuffs. After about 10 minutes, the cuffs were removed and the boyfriend was allowed to leave.
I asked one of the officers what was going on. I was informed that in this state, if the victim doesn't want to press charges, there is nothing the police can do.
I've seen on numerous occasions on TV when police arrive to domestic situations and there was visible proof of an assault, the perpetrator was always arrested, and I think rightfully so. This law must be examined.
If an individual is shot or stabbed, the perpetrator is going to jail, regardless of whether the victim presses charges. What’s the difference here?
