The Miller Citizens Corp. Shoreline Committee praises Gary police and firefighters. We also applaud the Gary public safety and parks personnel for attending our monthly committee meetings, responding to our concerns, and keeping our beaches safe.

The increased police presence at the beginning of our beach season curtailed irresponsible behavior along the beach. The fire department marine unit protected swimmers and boaters.

There were at least eight water rescues this summer. Our lifeguards did a fine job. For the past two years, there have been no drownings along Gary's beaches.

The cooperation among the fire, police, parks department and residents has benefited our community.

Thank you for creating safe, family-friendly beaches in Gary. Yes, in Gary.

Northwest Indiana residents, if you haven't been to our newly renovated Marquette Park, come next summer and enjoy our beautiful park along Lake Michigan. It is a gem!
