My volunteer work at Marquette Elementary School in Gary proved to be much more rewarding than my original intentions.
I witnessed a skilled and dedicated teacher, Ann Eldridge, the media specialist, perform what she conceives of as her job. She evaluates, distributes and protects all the library's reading materials. She conducts book fairs and reading contests and devises ways to raise funds for additional book and supply purchases.
Eldridge reads to the lower grades, conducts special classes for students deficient in reading skills, classes for explaining the library organization and classes for outlining and writing book reports. She never misses the opportunity for a "teaching moment." She is also responsible for the student crew that monitors hall safety and behavior.
All of these activities require tremendous energy and love for children.
I recommend you get involved in your schools and show your appreciation for the Ann Eldridges in your community.
