I was taken aback when I read the letter from the retired RN about the uninsured. To be working in health care and judge patients so harshly, wow.
Maybe that homeless person is homeless because they are a veteran with PTSD who lost everything. Maybe that druggie fell into a bad life for a million reasons we don't understand. The man who can't get any job, maybe he can only work certain hours to care for a family member so he's not being hired.
Maybe that unwed mother is like I was, where the father of the child walked away. I was an unwed mother who worked hard at my job and had no insurance, but I was by no means rabble because of my situation.
As a health care worker, it's not part of the job to judge everyone. The job is to care for patients and have compassion.
Not every destitute patient is a low-life. Everyone has their own story.
I'm wondering why anyone who has such a strong opinion about this would work where they would deal with many of these people every day in the first place.
