I find Ron Henson's Feb. 13 letter regarding the character of former U.S. Rep. Lee Hamilton of Indiana (1965-1999) very offensive.

Henson's reference to "the look of Hamilton's picture" is even more offensive. Hamilton lost his wife in a freak automobile accident a few months ago.

It is obvious Henson does not know Hamilton, who was head of the prestigious Washington Woodrow Wilson Institute. Hamilton is now teaching at Indiana University's law school. He also serves on the U.S. Homeland Security Advisory Council.

I met Lee when his family was the first to welcome me back from World War II. Later he was awarded the Trester Award for character in the Indiana state basketball finals. His election as a Democrat in a Republican district was indicative of his bi-partisanship in Congress for 34 years.

To call Hamilton a "hypocrite and lifelong political hack" makess me thankful that Valparaiso University brought Hamilton to speak on civility.
