Jim Hoffman, in a response to my letter decrying the uselessness of the national weapons of mass destruction Republicans, insinuated that liberals like myself need to become "self-reliant."

I must confess to being on the government and union "dole" big time. The government supported me as an enlisted man for more than four years. After being discharged, I was able to obtain an associate degree using "government" money saved while in the service, along with money earned while working some really nasty summer labor jobs at three different "union" companies.

With the assistance of the government's GI bill, I obtained a bachelor's degree at a state-supported school, followed by a salaried job, while working full time at a union company for four years. The government's help, along with a "better than living union wage," enabled my family to live comfortably.

Needless to say, my wife did not have it very easy raising our young children when I was not at home most of the time because of work and school.

I will never begrudge the state and federal taxes I pay because of the help I received.
