Immigrants continue to hold the key to our future

2012-07-02T00:00:00Z Immigrants continue to hold the key to our future

America desperately needs thousands of young people who are competitive in science, math and technology. Those who think we can fill these needs with native-born students alone are simply fear-driven, myopic and naive.

If we're smart, we'll encourage all students within our borders to be their best and to excel in academics. When many who achieve masters and doctorate degrees in fields where we have needs turn out to be illegal immigrants, we should offer each one a green card along with their diploma.

This would not be an altruistic act of kindness. It would be a move to encourage them to stay in the United States, working for our side instead of our competitors.

History has proven over and over again that immigrants, no matter how they arrived on our shores, have been our salvation. They continue to hold the key to our future.
