Democracy doesn't have the same meaning every time. A direct democracy is nothing more than majority "mob" rules.
In America, democracy means "the people" control the government, have more power than the government, are the employer of all elected government leaders. In America, our Declaration of Independence is dedicated to individual natural rights. Our U.S. Constitution is a continuation of the words and principles in the Declaration, and focuses on individual rights to be protected from the government and majority rule.
The "common good" is subjected to mob rule mentality. Collectivism is mob rule mentality. Mobs make themselves rulers over the individual. It is an un-American mentality.
Human beings are meant to be free. Government is meant to simply set some guidelines, not become our ruler -- even if a majority doesn't like the freedoms. Individual rights are natural and unalienable. They can't be taken away or voted away.
