A recent headline read, "Ethics ruling keeps Daniels clear for Purdue president job." Unless I read it wrong, it states that Inspector General David Thomas (who was appointed by Gov. Mitch Daniels) has ruled that Daniels did not violate any conflict of interest rules in accepting the job as the new president at Purdue University, because even though Daniels appointed or reappointed all of the trustees who then appointed him to this job, it was legal because state law requires him to oversee Indiana's seven public colleges and universities.

Surely there must be some mistake.

Oh wait, Thomas concludes, "The (conflict of interest) is not violated if the action is required by that public official through another statutory duty."

Silly me. What was I thinking? What does ethics have to do with it?
