Jim Biggs keeps asking how the Porter County Animal Shelter got in such bad shape. Under his control, the shelter was underfunded and overcrowded. Biggs' solution was to euthanize the animals at a rate of 10 cats and dogs per day.
The longtime director eventually quit and was quoted in The Times on June 20, 1996, as saying, "I'm not going to keep doing this county's dirty work by killing their dogs and cats for them."
I am intensely proud that Commissioner John Evans continued the no-kill policy of adoptable animals. Evans took control of the shelter in November and turned it around by installing a strong management team. I am very impressed at the level of care that Director Jon Thomas and his staff are providing for the animals. Adoptions are at record highs. He also sought an expert assessment to address the shelter's long-term needs.
Please keep Evans in charge of the animal shelter.
